A rat, an unwelcome guest, was spotted scurrying inside an ice cream freezer at a Blinkit store, sending shockwaves through the community and raising questions about the safety of food stored in these facilities.
This incident is not an isolated case. It comes on the heels of a broader scrutiny by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Maharashtra, which has already suspended the licenses of 14 establishments linked to Blinkit, Zepto, and Instamart. The FDA's inspection drive uncovered a myriad of food safety and hygiene violations, painting a picture of potential systemic issues within the industry.
One particular facility in Mumbai's Ghatkopar area, also linked to Blinkit, was found to be in a state of disrepair. Inadequate drainage, temperature control issues, and a cockroach infestation were among the findings. The facility scored a mere 34 out of 74 during the inspection, earning it a non-compliant classification. This facility's woes were further compounded by the discovery of damaged ceilings and flooring, and food items stored without proper segregation.

The chiller room was found to be operating at 6 degrees Celsius, which is above the prescribed temperature. Moreover, the facility failed to provide medical examination records for around 40 food handlers, a critical oversight in ensuring the health and safety of its workforce.
